Location:
Sailing out of Vallejo Marina cruising in San Pablo Bay
on a J-30.

General Description: Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions. Approximately 4 days on the water, plus a practical and written certification exam.

  • Motoring, operating and trouble shooting an inboard desiel engine
  • Proper fueling procedures
  • Moderate weather sailing skills including reefing and “heave to”
  • Proper marine radio procedure and communication
  • Full knowledge and practice of safety procedures
  • Proper Anchoring procedures
  • Proper preparations for your time on the water
  • Rules of the road
  • Correct nautical terms, commands and their uses
  • Crew teamwork and communications
  • Docking, rigging and de-rigging the main, jib, and Genoa sails
  • Sail theory and trim
  • Reading and understanding the wind and its effects on the boat
  • Sailing maneuvers including; tacking, reaching, running, coming about, heave to, controlled jibes, points of sail, reefing
  • Man overboard recovery

Teaching materials include ASA Sailing Fundamentals text book and video along with a personalized log book.

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat 101
Cost: $495.00 per person
$100.00 discount for annual members
(Annual members, experienced sailors and groups may receive additional discounts for a variety of program packages)
